Yayoi Kusama’s Let’s Survive Forever is one of the artist’s Infinity Mirrored Rooms that was staged at the Memorial Art Gallery. The design directive was limited, aside from the fact that we were not allowed to use Kusama’s oft-used dot motif. Kusama regularly uses the color red so I injected the color into the bold and contemporary typographic graphic identity.

Given the gallery constraints coupled with the studio’s installation requirements, I had to lay this show out between two “rooms” made with false walls. The planning process also accounted for visitor flow, timed tickets, and temporary gallery storage.

Lighting was an important aspect of the installation. The front room needed to be bright and engaging, as it contained the bulk of the didactic and educational information, while the back needed to be toned down to give the mirror room its distinct pop of brightness upon entering. All graphics were either full wall mural prints or museum vinyl (like the red dot in the quote).
